With six seasons down, the show has served fans across Africa, and the world with edutainment series focused on creating awareness about safe sex and HIV/AIDS. In Africa, MTV's Shuga has had a lot of impact on the young viewers. This has been achieved by depicting the experiences young people go through in a film.

The first season was shot in Kenya with the directors recreating the scenes in campuses, local bars and joints where young people have fun. This made many young people identify with the show as some of them experience the life depicted in the film. In addition, the MTV Shuga cast in the first season comprised of young talented actors who quickly became a darling of the fans. Some have used the MTV Shuga platform to grow big and gain fans across the globe.

Undoubtedly, the hardcore MTV Shuga fans can never forget Lupita Nyong’o. The Oscar Winner for Best Supporting Actress in the much acclaimed '12 Years A Slave' starred in three episodes of the first season. Lupita Nyong’o played Ayira, a beautiful and ambitious college student before she went on to become a successful Hollywood star. Many fans cannot forget Lupita for playing Ayira, a character that required her to juggle two men. The fans love her for this role as most youths struggle with such experiences.

Another fan favorite emerged in season 4 which was shot in Lagos, Nigeria. Adesua Etomi, the wife to Banky W, plays Sheila who is an HIV negative woman. She is a fan favorite because of her stellar performance in Season 4. Also, Ikubese Emmanuel Ifeanyi has gained popularity for starring in 15 episodes of MTV’s Shuga, more than any other character. While MTV’s Shuga contains the A-list celebrities like Tiwa Savage and other musicians, the popularity of Adesua Etomi, Lupita Nyong’o and Ikubese Emmanuel Ifeanyi are dominant.
